Are Cullinan Diamond Mine underground tours running in 2026?

No. They were suspended from 30 April 2023, and no operator or Petra statement since then says they have resumed.

The mine's owner put it in writing. Petra's media statement of 15 May 2023 says that "following a full health and safety review, the underground tours have been suspended", effective 30 April 2023, and that the mine "will continue allowing surface mine tours".

We checked again in October 2026. Premier Diamond Tours and Fundani Tours list surface tours and nothing below ground. The Cullinan Tours website says it plainly: "Underground tours have been suspended indefinitely." We found no news report of a restart from 2024, 2025 or 2026.

Why were the underground tours stopped?

Safety. Petra cited a full health and safety review and "the high-risk involved" in taking visitors underground at a working mine.

The old tour was serious. It ran on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays, lasted about three hours and went more than 600 metres below the surface, with a safety briefing and protective gear (Tourism Update, Ridge Times). Showcaves, using 2021 data, lists it at 4.5 hours, age 16 and up, and R550, with overalls, a helmet, a lamp and boots provided. Retired mine workers often guided the groups.

A working block-cave mine is a hard place for tourists, and the mine chose production and safety over tourism. The village felt it. Councillor Johannes Bekker told local media the tours supported restaurants, shops and guesthouses in Cullinan.

What can you do at the Cullinan mine instead?

Take the surface tour: about two hours with a film, a replica diamond room, a life-size tunnel model, the working shafts and the Big Hole lookout.

Two operators work from 99 Oak Avenue in Cullinan village. Premier Diamond Tours runs the walking surface tour daily, including public holidays, at 10:30 and 12:00, and lists it at R200 on its booking page. Booking is essential, and its visitors form plus a copy of each visitor's ID must arrive at least 2 working days before. Fundani Tours also runs surface tours and asks for an indemnity form by email and no alcohol in the 12 hours before. Its page leaves times and prices blank, so ask them directly.

The tunnel model is the closest you get to the old underground trip. The shafts are real: they hoist rock and workers from 934 m. Which pages still sell or describe Cullinan underground tours?

Several. A South African Tourism article, the Showcaves listing and older blogs still mention them, and some tour photos show visitors in overalls under an "underground mine tours" sign.

The South African Tourism article on Cullinan still says to "choose a surface, motorised, or underground tour of the working mine". Showcaves still describes a 4.5-hour underground tour at R550, with prices marked 2021. Wikipedia's page on Cullinan town has also lagged behind.

Listings can mislead by picture alone. The Johannesburg mine tour on GetYourGuide uses an old photo of a group in overalls under a sign for underground tours, while its own text describes a 1.5 to 2-hour surface tour. The text is right; the photo is history. Visitors notice the gap. One GetYourGuide reviewer of the walking tour wrote in March 2026 that they "would also love the underground experiences but I can't find it on the site".

How do you spot an outdated Cullinan tour listing?

Look for underground depths, overalls and lamps, a minimum age of 16, prices around R550, or a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday schedule. Those details belong to the pre-2023 tour.

Use this checklist before you pay:

• Depth claims. "600 metres down" or "descend in the cage" describes the old tour.
• Gear. Overalls, boots and miner's lamps were underground kit. Today you get a hard hat and a vest.
• Age 16+. The underground minimum. The surface tour takes ages 10 and up.
• R550 or 4.5 hours. Old underground pricing and length.
• Mon, Wed, Sat only. The old underground schedule. Surface walks run daily.
• No date on the page. If the text cannot tell you when it was written, assume it is old.

Could underground tours at Cullinan come back?

Possibly, but nothing has been announced. Any restart would need the mine's approval, and the mine's ownership is now under review.

In 2023 Petra said talks with tour operators about "other tourism opportunities" were ongoing. We have seen no outcome. Since 1 October 2026 Petra has been in a strategic review that could lead to a sale of its assets, Cullinan included. A new owner would set its own rules for visitors. That could cut both ways, and anyone who promises you a date is guessing.

If underground tours return, the operators in Cullinan village will announce it first. Until then, book the surface tour and enjoy it for what it is.
