Petra's strategic review and Cullinan

Petra Diamonds has opened the door to selling its assets, and Cullinan is the only mine it has left. Nothing is sold, the mine is working, and the surface tours go on.

On 1 October 2026 Petra Diamonds, the London-listed company that owns 74% of the Cullinan Diamond Mine, announced a strategic review. The review can include a sale of the company's assets. Petra has sold or lost its other mines, so Cullinan sits at the centre of that review.

Headlines like "mines up for sale" travel fast, and they raise two questions for visitors: is the mine closing, and are tours cancelled? This post sets out what Petra has said, what it has not, and what any of it means for a visit, as of 27 October 2026.

The quick answer

Petra launched a strategic review on 1 October 2026 that may lead to a sale of its assets, including Cullinan, its only remaining mine. No sale has been agreed and Petra says there is "no certainty as to the outcome". The mine keeps operating. Tours are run by independent operators in Cullinan village, and the surface walking tour is still on sale.

What did Petra Diamonds announce on 1 October 2026?

A strategic review of "all potential paths" to meet its near-term cash needs, including a possible sales process for its assets. Questco Corporate Advisory was named to run it on 5 October.

Petra made the announcement after talks with "certain key stakeholders including its first and second lien creditors", in the words reported by Miningmx. Lien creditors are lenders whose loans are secured on the company's assets. When they push for a review, it usually means the money is tight. The board also changed: chair José Manuel Vargas stepped down and Lerato Molebatsi became interim chair, according to Mining Weekly.

Four days later, on 5 October, Petra appointed Questco Corporate Advisory to run the review. IDEX Online reports that Questco's job includes seeking expressions of interest. Then, on 22 October, Petra said it would miss the 31 October deadline for its audited annual accounts, and IDEX Online reports that the company expects its shares to be suspended from trading on 2 November.

Is the Cullinan Diamond Mine being sold?

Not as of 27 October 2026. Cullinan is inside the review, but no buyer, price or deal has been announced.

The review is a process, not a decision. Petra said there is "no certainty as to the outcome of the strategic review" and that "the board will make further announcements in due course" (Rapaport). A sale is one option. Refinancing, new investors or a restructuring of the debt are others.

What makes Cullinan the centre of attention is simple arithmetic. Koffiefontein was sold in 2024 and Williamson in Tanzania in 2025. Finsch, in the Northern Cape, went into business rescue in May 2026 and stopped producing in June. That leaves Cullinan as Petra's only producing mine. Petra owns 74% of it. Kago Diamonds holds 14% and the Itumeleng Petra Employee Trust 12% (Petra).

Our wording on this site will stay plain: owned and operated by Petra, in a strategic review that could lead to a sale. If you read that Cullinan "has been sold", check the date and the source.

Why is Petra Diamonds in financial trouble?

Debt and weak diamond prices. Net debt reached US$322m at the end of June 2026, while prices for smaller rough diamonds stayed low and the rand stayed strong.

Petra's own FY2026 update of 28 July gives the numbers. Cash at bank was US$28m, of which US$9m was unrestricted. The R1.75bn revolving credit facility was fully drawn. The senior lender deferred about US$6m of interest to January 2027 and added a R300m working capital facility, with refinancing talks due to produce non-binding terms by the end of October 2026.

Cullinan itself is the healthy part of the group. It produced 1,398,604 carats in FY2026 and its revenue rose to US$149m from US$135m, at an average of US$106 a carat. Petra says mining could continue into the late 2040s. The problem sits in the balance sheet, not in the pipe of kimberlite under Cullinan village.

Does the strategic review affect Cullinan mine tours?

No change has been announced. Tours are run by independent operators with the mine's permission, and the surface walking tour is still listed on GetYourGuide.

Petra does not sell tours itself. Its 2023 media statement says mine visits go through tour operators, who follow the mine's compulsory protocols. Two operators work from 99 Oak Avenue in the village: Premier Diamond Tours, with walking tours at 10:30 and 12:00 daily, and Fundani Tours. Premier's own booking page lists the walk at R200.

A share suspension is a stock market event. It does not stop the hoist at No. 1 Shaft, and it does not cancel a 10:30 tour. The thing that changed visitors' plans at Cullinan happened in 2023, when underground tours were suspended for safety reasons. That story is in our underground tours update.

Our advice: book the surface walking tour as normal, and keep free cancellation on in case anything changes.

What could change for visitors if Cullinan gets a new owner?

Nobody knows yet. Tours depend on the mine owner's safety rules, so a new owner could keep, change or expand them. Treat any prediction as a guess.

Here is what is certain. The surface tour exists because the mine allows it, under protocols the mine sets. A buyer would inherit the mine, its permits and its workforce, and would decide its own approach to visitors. That could be the same arrangement, stricter rules, or something new. Petra's 2023 statement said talks with operators about "other tourism opportunities" were ongoing. We have not seen any result of those talks.

What will not change is the history. The 3,106-carat Cullinan Diamond came out of this pipe in 1905, and the blue diamonds keep coming: a 41.82-carat blue was recovered in December 2025. Our guide on whether the mine is still active covers how the mine works today.

How can you follow the news before your trip?

Watch Petra's stock exchange announcements and the mining press, and check the operator's site in the week you travel.

Petra publishes its news as regulatory announcements on the London Stock Exchange, which the Petra website links to. Mining Weekly, Miningmx, Rapaport and IDEX Online covered every step so far. We will update this post when the review produces a result.

For the trip itself, two checks matter more than the corporate news: the tour time on the operator's page, and the paperwork. Premier Diamond Tours asks for its visitors form and a copy of each visitor's ID at least 2 working days before the tour. Closed flat shoes are required. Our day trip guide covers getting there.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before, so booking now costs nothing if the news changes.
